Almost everyone has a skincare routine before going to bed; but even if we have the best intentions when it comes to taking care of our skin, we still end up being guilty of a mistake or two. And the worst part? There are some mistakes that we are not aware of (although some of which are very common) and the sad part is — we’re doing it on a daily basis.
Here are some skin care practices that we should avoid:
Improper Way Of Cleaning The Skin, Or Not Cleaning At All
Cleaning our skin at least twice a day is important but sadly, some of us are not washing our faces and skins thoroughly. Cleansing is very important and doing it once is simply not enough to get rid of the dirt, oil, makeup and product residues.
To ensure that your skin is clean after a long day outside (or even inside), use a cleanser that suits your skin type.
Never Exfoliating, Over-Exfoliating
If we don’t exfoliate, the dead skin cells are trapped in our pores, thus, leading to clogs, blackheads, and acne. When skin is dehydrated, dead cells worsen the condition by forming a barrier that prevents the live cells to get hydrated.
Too much exfoliation, on the other hand, also causes skin damage. It can result in flaking, dehydration, swelling, and possible stimulation of melanin causing increased hyperpigmentation. Exfoliants like facial scrubs should not be used more than two or three times a week while exfoliants with chemicals should be used three nights on, three nights off.
Ditching Healthy Diet
A very basic reminder: our skin is a reflection of what you eat and what you do. That said, having bad habits lead to dullness, thinning of skin and dark circles. Make healthy diet high on the priority list by eating frequently in small portions.
If your skin is dull or you’re having acne problems, increase your water intake and limit on sugars and be sure to take skin care products that have Vitamin C as it is an essential nutrient that the skin (and body) needs.
If you want to prevent wrinkles, wearing sunscreen every year is a must. The number one reason why your skin will age prematurely is from sunlight, daylight and UV rays.
Buy a sunscreen that suits and comforts your skin and make sure to use it every day, even if the sun is hiding.
Picking At Your Pimples
Every one of us is guilty of doing this – picking, popping and touching! The outcome is dreadful as this makes the acne to last longer, leaving a post-breakout red or dark scar.
It’s best to leave troubled skin be, whether it’s acne or dry skin. Use a good product for it — a medicated one if required –and avoid trying to ‘fix it’ using a ton of methods.
